BDM X-Bow Clubsport Race Car SA
Greg Parton has been racing in South Africa for a few years now and competes in Time Attack, Hill Climb and Circuit Racing. His most recent race car is a tuned 600BHP Nissan GTR.
In 2010 a fellow competitor racing an X-Bow caught his attention. He could tell the car had potential but unfortunately it was a standard car and quickly showed it didn't have the pace. Greg found BDM and quickly realised we had the experience and knowledge necessary to make the X-Bow competitive.
With a six week timescale, BDM had to be swift and quickly bought the donor car from Racing Line. The Stainless Steel Pipework is all tig welded in house and with most of the parts in stock, the team set about stripping the car down to it's bare bones.
The first major component to start full dissassembly was the 2.0 TFSi Engine. With the full car taken apart and cleaned, the new parts could be fitted, tested and set up. The next stage was to deliver the car to Heathrow ready for air freight to Johannesburg. The car was tested by customs and then carefully loaded onto a pallet and finally onto the passenger 747. Must have been a strange site for the people on board!
The transport took only 2 days including customs in the UK. The car was held up for a while clearing customs in South Africa. Mark flew out to help with testing and set up in South Africa. The car was fully checked before loading to take it for it's maiden test on South African soil.
The chosen test track was Phasika, a couple of hours outside Johannesburg. Jackie Schekter, nephew of the Formula one world champion, a champion in his own right in the US, joined to give his opinion on the set up of the car.
In the first shakedown session the car was instantly quick and very well suited to the circuit. We stiffened the front damping to assist with turn in and to stabilise the rear end. The car will be racing in the GT class against cars like Porsche 997 cup cars and 430 Challenge cars which can run into the low 47's around this flowing circuit. The X-Bow started off in the low 50's and quickly ran down to low 48's.
Soon into the day the heat started to dampen the power from the car. Mark reduced the boost levels to reduce the intake temperatures and keep a more consistant power delivery. Also with a few more modifications and adjustments the times continued to tumble and finally with the car dropping into the 45's, the day drew to an end.
The potential of the car is fantastic and with the first race coming up this weekend it will be interesting to see where the BDM X-Bow will finish.
